Peacekeepers' Day

This Friday, May 29, the Brazilian Peace Operations Joint Training Center celebrated the International Day of the UN Peacekeepers. During the event, there was a parade in which the presidents of the Association of the Members of the Suez Battalion and of the Brazilian Interamerican Armed Force, as well as former members of peacekeeping missions, were present. At this opportunity, a message, written by the Minister of Defense and related to the International Day of the UN Peacekeepers, was read. Also, Colonel José Ricardo Vendramin Nunes made a speech. A flower wreath was laid on the monument to honor the ones who have fallen in Peace Missions. Afterwards, Taps was played.

The International Day of the UN Peacekeepers is a reference to May 29, 1948, when the UN Security Council authorized a peacekeeping operation for the first time. The mobilization took place in the Palestine after the cease fire of the Arab-Israeli war. From then on, great effort was done to search for peaceful solutions for international conflicts.
Brazil takes part in UN peace missions since 1957, when it sent troops to the Suez Canal, in Egypt, in the existing conflict between the State of Israel and the Arabs.
