Ministry of Defense carries out Workshop on the 10 years of MINUSTAH

Itaipava (RJ) – The workshop on "The Ten Years of MINUSTAH" (United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti), an international event coordinated by the Ministry of Defense, took place from August 11 to 15. On August 11, there was the opening of the event by a representative of the Ministry of Defense and the presence of military personnel from Argentina, Chile, Ecuador, Guatemala, Uruguay and Brazil.
The Brazilian Peace Operations Joint Training Center (CCOPAB) carried out the activities of the workshop. On the first day, there was a cycle of lectures with the objective to do a historical analysis of the mission. The presentations were carried out by General AUGUSTO HELENO RIBEIRO PEREIRA and General FLORIANO PEIXOTO VIEIRA NETO, Force Commanders in the mission, by General ANÍSIO DAVID DE OLIVEIRA, commander of the Brazilian Battalion and by Mr. BRUNO NUNES BRANT, first secretary at Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The lecturers addressed themes about Brazil and the United Nations Peace Operations, the implementation of the Mandate, the role of the military component of MINUSTAH in the 2010 earthquake, the present situation and the perspectives on the mission.
The other days were dedicated to presentations on training and deployment of MINUSTAH's troop contributing countries, and to group works followed by discussions on lessons learned.
According to Colonel JUAN ANTONIO MONTOYA FLORES, Director of Peace Operations of the National Defense Staff of the Guatemalan Army, the experience he got from the seminar was very fruitful: "it's clear the concern with which our Brazilian brothers assisted us, not to mention the quality of the lecturers. The experience acquired must be converted into doctrine and applied in our countries", stated the Guatemalan officer.
