CCOPAB celebrates October 24 – the 76th anniversary of the United Nations
On October 22, the Brazilian Peace Operations Joint Training Center - Sergio Vieira de Mello Center, a Brazilian Army Teaching Establishment, subordinate to the Department of Military Technical Education (DETMIL, acronym in Portuguese), held a ceremony to celebrate the seventy-sixth anniversary of the United Nations.
Brazil is a founding member of the UN, and the Brazilian delegation signed the United Nations Charter on June 26, 1945, at the San Francisco Conference. Since 1957, it has participated, efficiently and effectively, in peacekeeping missions, having sent Brazilian personnel to 41 of the 71 missions deployed by Security Council resolutions.
More than 56 thousand Brazilian military, police, and civilian men and women have already been deployed to Central America, Africa, Europe, Middle East, and Asia, being a traditional Troop and Police Contributing Country (TCC/PCC) in peacekeeping operations.
The presence of the following authorities, among others, was a highlight of the ceremony:
- Ambassador Márcia Maro da Silva, Head of the Office of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, located in Rio de Janeiro;
- Major General Alexandre Oliveira Cantanhede Lago, Director of the Department of Military Technical Education; and
- Professor Dr. Ricardo Oliveira dos Santos, from the Catholic University of Rio and Education Coordinator of the Brazilian Network of Research on Peace Operations (REBRAPAZ, acronym in Portuguese).
At the celebration event, besides the presence of CCOPAB's staff, thirty-five trainees (being sixteen from the Brazilian Army, who finished the Comprehensive Protection of Civilians Course and who will soon be deployed to UN peace missions) attended the ceremony.
