CCOPAB celebrates World Humanitarian Day

Rio de Janeiro (RJ) - On the morning of 19 August, the Brazilian Peace Operations Joint Training Center (CCOPAB) – Sérgio Vieira de Mello Center - carried out a parade to celebrate the World Humanitarian Day.

In 2008, The United Nations General Assembly designated the day of 19 August as the World Humanitarian Day, in order to raise awareness about humanitarian assistance all over the world, as well as to pay a tribute to those who have risked their lives to support people in need, in areas of conflict.

This date makes a reference to the Baghdad attack of 2003, which killed the UN Special Representative of the Secretary General in Iraq - Sérgio Vieira de Mello - and 21 other UN collaborators and employees.

That was the most violent terrorist attack against UN facilities in its History.

The Brazilian Sérgio Vieira de Mello spent most of his life at the UN service. Since 1969, his presence has been significant to many humanitarian and peace missions, as the ones in Bangladesh, Sudan, Cyprus, Mozambique, Peru, Cambodia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and East Timor.

By means of Ordinance Nr 949 of 03 December 2008, from the Brazilian Army Commander, CCOPAB was historically named Sérgio Vieira de Mello Center.
