CCOPAB carries out Training Course for Journalists and Press Advisors in Conflict Areas

Rio de Janeiro (RJ) - From 15 to 19 July, the Brazilian Peace Operations Joint Training Center - Sergio Vieira de Mello Center - held the Training Course for Journalists and Press Advisors in Conflict Areas (EPJAIAC, acronym in Portuguese).

EPJAIAC was attended by 35 (thirty-five) press professionals and it aimed at training journalists and press advisors to carry out their professional activities in armed conflict environments or in peace missions under the United Nations umbrella.

COL Machado, Commander of CCOPAB, presented the Center and the activities that are done to prepare military and police personnel, as well as civilians to participate in peace missions. On the first day, representatives of the Special Forces were present. They were able to present the actions that had been taken in the area of Social Communication. Rear Admiral João Alberto de Araujo Lampert represented the Navy. Air Force Colonel André Luís Ferreira Grandis spoke about the Brazilian Air Force. COL Alexandre Guerra explained the Brazilian Army's point of view, especially regarding its relationship with the press.

The work routine in the course was intense, with several theoretical and practical activities. The students participated in the following instructions: first aid; progression in risky areas; firefighting; mines and procedures in suspected areas; communication and negotiation; chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear defense; effect of firearms; basic navigation; basic mechanics and preparation of food ration. In order to practice the instructions given, they took part in an activity in the terrain, which was conducted on Wednesday.

COL Carlos Frederico Gomes Cinelli (Army), Military Justice Prosecutor Dr. Najla Palma, 1st LT Pedro Doshikazu Pianchao Aihara (CBMMG, acronym in Portuguese), Mr. Marcelo Rech and Mr. Betinho Casas Novas participated as invited instructors.

The certificate was delivered to the students by COL Machado, Commander of CCOPAB, accompanied by COL Fábio Negrão de Souza, Head of the Division of Peace Missions from the Land Operations Command (COTER, acronym in Portuguese) and Maj Marcus Alves from Army Social Communication Center (CCOMSEx, acronym in Portuguese).
