CCOPAB celebrates World Humanitarian Day at Sergio Vieira de Mello School

Rio de Janeiro (RJ) - In the morning of August 31, members of the the Brazilian Peace Operations Joint Training Center (CCOPAB, acronym in Portuguese) visited Sergio Vieira de Mello Municipal School, in Leblon, in order to celebrate World Humanitarian Day. The Brazilian National Anthem was sung and, following there was a lecture for the students on the life of SergioVieira de Mello and on the ways to join the Army. Recrutinha comic book was also distributed to the kids.

World Humanitarian Day is celebrated every year and it dates back to 2003, when the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Sergio Vieira de Mello, assigned as the Special Representative of the Secretary General in Iraq was tragically killed along with other 21 UN employees in Baghdad, due to a terrorit attack against UN peace unit. The High Commissioner was chosen as patron of CCOPAB in a way to recognize his more than 34 years of work under the aegis of the United Nations in different parts of the world.
