CCOPAB and Igarapé Institute disseminate ideas about the National Action Plan on gender

The fulfillment of the specific needs of women, linked to a higher female participation in planning and actions for peace consolidation, brings lasting gains in this process. In order to meet this expectation, the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) approved resolution 1325 in 2000, and acknowledged that conflicts have different impacts on women in comparison to men. The Council also sustained the gender perspective in peace operations. Aiming to standardize the new protocol, UNSC urged the member states to develop National Action Plans (NAP) so that they could come up with their own strategies, assets and key elements to implement Women, Peace and Security agenda (WPS).

In October of 2016, Brazil started the formulation of the NAP, through an interministerial intiative, which involved the Defense, Foreign Relations and Justice, as well as Igarapé Institute and UN Women that represented the civil society. The Brazilian Peace Operations Joint Training Center (CCOPAB, acronym in Portuguese), in charge of the preparation of military and police personnel as well as civilians for peace missions, addresses gender topics in its trainings and courses. This approach has contributed in the prevention of violence gender related problems involving Brazilian military personnel during peace missions, according to the goals of NAP, and that positively emphasizes the role of Brazil on the international stage.
