CCOPAB visits War and Peace Cultural Exposition at Rio de Janeiro Municipal Theater.

Candido Portinari panels exhibition took place from 22 to 30 December, 2010, at Rio de Janeiro Municipal Theater and counted on the presence of the Commander of Brazilian Peacekeeping Operations Joint Center, Mr. Colonel Pessôa, together with 3º Sergeant ALEXANDRE SÉRGIO of the Public Relations Division.

Between 1952 and 1956, Candido Portinari made the two last and greatest   murals, “War and Peace”, requested by the Brazilian government to grant the United Nations Secretariat, in New York.

Placed at the entrance Hall of the General Assembly, the monumental panels are at a noble but restricted place.  For this reason, the Portinari project has always dreamed to divulge “War and Peace” to the public.

Candido Portinari died of ink poisoning, due to exposition and inhaling of toxic compounds.   When he painted his magnificent artwork, he had been prohibited to do so by his doctors.   But the painter neither backed out to the challenge nor to the greatest work of his life.
