Symposium of Civil-Military Cooperation in Peacekeeping Operations (3rd Day)

The third day of CIMIC Symposium was marked by environmental flexibility and by plurality of discourses.

On April 8, 2010, in the auditorium of the Center for Personnel Studies (acronym in Portuguese: CEP), Argentinean Navy Commander ACOSTA, CIOpPAZ instructor, started the lectures of the third day of the 2010- 1 Symposium of Civil- Military Cooperation (CIMIC) in Peacekeeping Operations. He talked about the “Peculiarities of the civil-military cooperation in natural disasters”. After a short interval, Dr. RICARDO AFFONSO FERREIRA, President of NGO Brazilian Health Expeditions, mentioned the recovering work for the amputee in indigenous villages in the Amazon and in the contingency situation after the earthquake in Haiti.

The following activity on that day was the visit by all of  CIMIC Symposium participants to the communities of Chapéu Mangueira and Babilônia slums, both of which in the vicinity of CEP. The aim of the visit was getting familiar with UPP (Unit of Peacemaking Police), stationed in that area since June of 2009, and their actions. CIMIC Symposium participants were hosted by the UPP commander of those communities, Military Police Captain FELIPE, who introduced the representatives and the leaders of both communities and enabled an important exchange of experiences by reporting the most relevant projects accomplished in those communities.

In the afternoon, Dr. JOSÉ LUIZ DO AMARAL, President of the Brazilian Medical Association, made a presentation concerning that association. Afterwards, Mr. PETER KIKOT, an American citizen who has lived in Haiti for three years and runs an orphanage there, also reported his experience in voluntary work in that country. Eventually Ms. MARIA ALICE PIRES REBELLO, institutional partnership assistant of Actionaid, spoke about the developed work by that NGO.

To close the assignments of the third day, CIMIC symposium participants were divided in four groups in order to accomplish a workshop concerning the theme “the integrated work of partners of a mission area in the event of natural disasters”, involving the learned lessons during the symposium.
