On 6 and 7 of February, 2013, the Preparatory Course for Peacekeeping Missions (acronym in Portuguese: EPMP) counted on the participation of instructors with broad experience in previous MINUSTAH Staff. Those officers were invited by CCOPAB and made lectures concerning the following topics:
At the beginning of the fourth day, the military personnel participated in a Command Post Exercise (CPEx). During the exercise, the staff of the 18th Brazilian contingent of BRABAT and BRAENGCOY had to tackle previous contingents' real mission-based situations, and thus come up with a solution for the presented problems. That made it possible for the military personnel to have their first contact with situations likely to be faced during their deployment on the ground.
The morning of the fourth day of the Course for Military Translators and Interpreters (acronym in Portuguese: ETIMil) started with a joint activity with the apprentices of the two language groups: they translated the lecture presented to one of the Brazilian Contingents by the wife of the Brazilian ambassador in Haiti. The aim of this activity was to have the two groups train simultaneous interpretation, more specifically the whispering category.
At the end of the second day of the course for unit commanders and staff officers of the 18th Brazilian contingent in Haiti, CPT Ana Cardoso delivered a lecture on the use of interpreters in PKO to the military personnel (Pictures 1 and 2). The aforementioned captain presented the techniques to make use of the interpreters aiming at establishing communication with the other TCCs and the Haitian population.
During the third day of the Course for Military Translators and Interpreters (acronym in Portuguese: ETIMil), the apprentices of the English language had instructions concerning the contrast of Portuguese and English languages through the analysis of the documents produced in the mission.
During the second day of the Course for Military Translators and Interpreters (acronym in Portuguese: ETIMil), the apprentices of the English language had theoretical and practical instructions concerning the principles of translation and interpretation, study cases, phone call activities and translation tools (CAT, MT, TM etc.), whereas the apprentices of the French language had instructions concerning specific issues of the Haitian French, a review of the principles of interpretation, oral comprehension activities and practice of translation and version. Both groups had very good participation during the practice of the skills needed for the functions they will work with in Haiti.
