CCOPAB participated in international meeting to update the UN Guidelines on Protection of Civilians

Guatemala City (Guatemala) - From 15 to 20 May 2022, Lieutenant Colonel Adriano José do Nascimento, from the Brazilian Air Force, and Captain Camila de Almeida Paiva, from the Brazilian Army, both instructors at the Brazilian Peace Operations Joint Training Center (CCOPAB, acronym in Portuguese), participated in the international meeting to review and update the Implementing Guidelines for the Protection of Civilians for Military Components of UN Peacekeeping Missions.

The project began in December 2021, under the coordination of the UN Office of Military Affairs of the Department of Peace Operations (UN OMA/DPO), and was developed through videoconferences by Working Groups, composed by experts in the Protection of Civilians in the UN Peacekeeping Missions, from different nationalities.

Apart from the members of the Working Groups, the meeting counted on the presence of military Guatemalan authorities and a representative from the International Committee of the Red Cross in Guatemala, in addition to the Brazilian Colonel Valmir Adão Rodrigues Roberti, military attaché in that country.

The last update of the Implementing Guidelines for the Protection of Civilians for Military Components of UN Peacekeeping Missions happened in 2015; a periodic update was then necessary, due to changes in threatening scenarios for vulnerable populations. The product of these updates will be sent to the UN Department of Peace Operations for a final evaluation, and its publication is scheduled for the end of the current year.
