CCOPAB participates in the Senior Workshop on International Rules governing Military Operations (SWIRMO 2021), of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC)
Rio de Janeiro, RJ. From 25 to 28 October 2021, Brazilian Peace Operations Joint Training Center – Sergio Vieira de Mello Center – participated in the 14th edition of SWIRMO 2021, organized by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).
The SWIRMO course is an important event, annually organized by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). The 2007, 2008, 2010 and 2016 editions took place in Switzerland. In 2009, in France; in 2011, in South Africa; in 2012, in Malaysia; in 2013, in Colombia; in 2014, in China; in 2015, in Algeria; in 2017, in Mexico; in 2018, in the United Arab Emirates; and in 2019, in the Russian Federation.
In 2021, due to the restrictions imposed by the Covid-19 pandemic, the online workshop was carried out by the ICRC headquarters in Geneva (Switzerland), aiming at:
- Develop mutual understanding between the military and the ICRC in a multidimensional environment;
- Examine the challenges of the practical application of the Law of Armed Conflict (LOAC) on the modern battlefield, especially those related to military operations in association with other actors and urban warfare; and
- Promote a shared vision of LOAC integration, specifically in military planning, when carrying out military operations.
SWIRMO 2021 will allow CCOPAB to ratify the training and qualification of contingents (troops), UN Staff Officers, UN Military Observers and UN Individual Police Officers regarding International Humanitarian law and Protection of Civilians, during the pre-deployment training towards United Nations peacekeeping operations.
