CCOPAB finishes the 3rd edition of the United Nations Peace Operations Comprehensive Protection of Civilians

Rio de Janeiro - From October 13 to 22, the Brazilian Peace Operations Joint Training Center - Sergio Vieira de Mello Center -, a Brazilian Army Teaching Establishment, subordinate to the Department of Military Technical Education (DETMIL, acronym in Portuguese) carried out the third edition of the United Nations Peace Operations Comprehensive Protection of Civilians Course. As a pre-deployment training (PDT), the Course aims at preparing military and police officers to perform functions related to the protection of civilians in UN peacekeeping operations.

The activity, entirely held in English, was developed in accordance with the curriculum defined by the UN Department of Peace Operations: in the first phase, the Core Pre-Deployment Training Materials; and in the second, subjects from the Specialized Training Materials concerning Protection of Civilians.

During the two weeks of training, thirty-five attendees were trained, as it follows: sixteen (16) from the Brazilian Army, eight (08) from the Brazilian Navy, six (06) from the Brazilian Air Force, and five (05) from the Brazilian States Police Forces.

Currently, most of peace missions mandates, implemented by the United Nations Security Council, have the Protection of Civilians as a primary task, including issues related to child protection, humanitarian assistance to internally displaced persons and refugees, human rights, sexual violence, among others.
