CCOPAB carries out Hostile Environment Awareness Training for Civilians (HEAT)

Rio de Janeiro, RJ - From 24 to 28 August, CCOPAB delivered the Hostile Environment Awareness Training for Civilians (HEAT 2020), whose objective was to sensitize and prepare civilians who shall work in unstable environments. The activity primarily meant to provide students with basic notions on individual protection and security.

For this edition, 34 students from the following national and international institutions attended the course: Caritas Brazil, International Organization for Migration, State Department of Penitentiary Administration, Floripa Impact Hub, Public Security and Justice State Department (MG), USP, PUC-Rio, Southern Baptist Convention - International Mission Board, Brazilian Red Cross (PA), Office of Institutional Security, REBRAPAZ, DEPOE, UNHCR, Solar do Rosário, OAB-MS, UVA, UFRJ/ESG, Salvador Guardianship Council, Rio de Janeiro City Hall, British Consulate General - Rio de Janeiro, Volunteer Connection in Campos, IBMR and STJ.

The students received instructions on communication, negotiation, first aid, firefighting, risk analysis and mitigation, chemical biological radiological and nuclear defense (CBRND), and the like.

It is important to highlight the participation of Ms. Viviane Balbino, Advisor at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Dr. Eduarda Hamann, coordinator of REBRAPAZ, talking about the participation of Brazilian civilians in unstable environments; Ms. Bia Albernaz, sharing her field experience in MONUSCO, in the Political Mission in Colombia, and when working with refugees in South Sudan; and Ms. Fernanda Brasil, on her participation in UN Missions in Haiti, DRC, CAR and Mali.

Furthermore, the HEAT 2020 relied on the significant support from the following military organizations of Vila Militar:
- 27th Airborne Infantry Bn;
- Airborne Pathfinder Coy;
- 57th Mtz Infantry Bn;
- 15th Mechanized Cavalry Regiment;
- Specialized Training School;
- Eastern Military Training Center; and
- Afonsos Air Force Base.
