CCOPAB takes part in Civilian Committee Workshop from the Latin American Association of Peacekeeping Training Centers (ALCOPAZ)

On 06 August 2020, the Brazilian Peace Operations Joint Training Center - Sergio Vieira de Mello Center - took part in the first online workshop organized by the civilian committee of the Latin American Association of Peacekeeping Training Centers (ALCOPAZ). The theme of the workshop was “Training Latin American Civilians towards Peace Operations.” As guest lecturers, there were Dr. Karla Pinheiro, a professor at UNICURITIBA and Mrs. Bia Albernaz Rocha de Oliveira, with former UN experience in the civilian component.

Dr. Karla talked about her ongoing research on the training of civilians from Latin America. During her presentation, she explained the current panorama of the civilian participation in UN missions and their main tasks, as well as listing renowned international training centers offering training for civilians. She highlighted how significant it is to understand the field work of civilians in order to adjust the curricula at training centers, mainly ALCOPAZ members; thus making course offers as close as possible to the reality of potential students.

During her turn, Mrs. Bia Albernaz shared her humanitarian experience in UN missions. She has got experience in MONUSCO humanitarian actions, Human Rights Office in Kinshasa; UN SPM in Colombia; and again, in the DR Congo, at the UNHCR. According to her, civilians have a great spectrum of tasks inside UN missions.

MAJ Christiane Lima and MAJ Félix, both instructors at CCOPAB, represented the Joint Center in the workshop.
