From November 26 to 30, the Brazilian Peace Operations Joint Training Center (CCOPAB, acronym in Portuguese) along with Igarapé Institute carried out the Training of Civilians to Work in Unstable Environments (EPCAAI, acronym in Portuguese). The aim was to sensitize participants of the importance of the training for civilians who will be deployed to work in unstable areas. The training focuses on teaching attendees the basic knowledge regarding individual safety and protection.
There was the participation of twenty-five attendees from the following Brazilian institutions: Brazilian Intelligence Agency, Rio Operations Center, Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (EMBRAPA, acronym in Portuguese), War College, Ministry of Planning, Budget and Management, Public Prosecutor Offices of Paraíba and Rio Grande do Sul, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Duque de Caxias and Rio de Janeiro Town Halls, Rio Catholic University, Rio de Janeiro State Secretary of Penitentiary Administration, São Carlos Federal University and University of Curitiba. It is worth highlighting that this has been the very first edition which counted on the participation of diplomats, Brazilian and British alike.
The students had the opportunity to meet many military units of the Brazilian Armed Forces and had theoretical and practical lessons. The Training also counted on the support of Spanish Army Colonel Emílio Dias, terrorism expert, who was one of the instructors.
In the end, Mrs. Fernanda Brasil, a Brazilian civilian who worked for UN peace missions in Haiti, Democratic Republic of the Congo and in Central African Republic, delivered a lecture on her mission experiences and on how students could be better prepared concerning their personal safety.
