Civil-Military Coordination Course held at CCOPAB

Between September 25 and 29, the Brazilian Peace Operations Joint Training Center (CCOPAB, acronym in Portuguese) held for the second time this year the Civil-Military Coordination Course (CIMIC). The aim of the course is to capacitate Brazilian and Friendly Nations military personnel to work with activities related to the United Nations Civil Affairs System and go over Civil-Military related subjects with members of the academia and of interested institutions.

Diversity of participants is one of the features of CIMIC Course and this second semester edition had 41 attendees from different institutions, as it follows: Brazilian Army, Brazilian Navy, Military Police from Rio de Janeiro State, participating universities of REBRAPAZ (Brazilian Network of Research on Peace Operations), office of the Brazilian Presidency of Republic, United Nations Development Programme, United Nations Human Settlements Programme and from the Chilean Joint Peacekeeping Operations Center (CECOPAC, acronym in Spanish). The Course was entirely held in English, just as its first edition in the previous semester.

Both in theoretical classes and in group discussions, the Course was mainly based on the UN-CIMIC Specialized Training Materials (STM), which enabled the attendees to develop their analysis and synthesis capabilities, the interchange and independence of opinions, written and oral expressions, ability to compare alternatives and acceptance of different points of view for decision making.

United Nations Certification of CIMIC Course Recognition

The Course was closely supervised by Kenyan Colonel Abraham Biwot, from the Integrated Training Service of the Department of Peacekeeping Operations (ITS/DPKO). After the closure of CIMIC Course, Colonel Biwot is to make a report on what was observed and assessed by him, which may lead to the Course Recognition Certification by the United Nations.

CCOPAB currently has four courses officially recognized by the United Nations: Experts on Mission Course for Staff Officers, Experts on Mission Course for Military Observers, Experts on Mission Course for UN Police and the Pre-deployment Advanced Field Exercise.
