Civil-Military Cooperation in Peacekeeping Operations Symposium – 1st day

CIMIC 2010-1 was opened at the Center for Personnel Studies in Leme

On April 6, 2010, Mr Colonel PEDRO AURÉLIO DE PESSÔA, Commander of the Peacekeeping Operations Training Center (CI Op Paz), made the opening speech of the 2010-1 Civil-Military Cooperation in Peacekeeping Operations (CIMIC) Symposium in the auditorium of the Center for Personnel Studies. During his speech, the Commander of CI Op Paz invited Dr. MARCIA ABDALA to report the initiative of NGO Brazilian Health Expeditions in giving humanitarian support to the disabled in Haiti shortly after the earthquake that struck that country.

After that, Mr. Colonel (Marine Corps) JOSÉ ALBERTO CUNHA COUTO spoke about “The Board of Institutional Security (GSI – acronym in Portuguese) in natural disasters – recent procedures and experiences” and counted on the collaboration of Mr. J. A. DE MACEDO SOARES, Adjunct Secretary of the Follow-on Institutional Studies of the Cabinet of Institutional Security of the Brazilian Presidency of the Republic, which influenced positively on the debate concerning this important issue.

In the afternoon, Minister MILTON RONDÓ FILHO, General-Coordinator of International Actions for Hunger Prevention (CGFOME, acronym in Portuguese), made a speech concerning “The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MRE, acronym in Portuguese) in natural disasters – recent procedures and experiences”. The activities of the first day of the symposium ended with Sergeant Major CARLOS EDUARDO FURQUIM´s presentation on “Risk Analysis”, which enhanced the most relevant practical aspects to guarantee security in a high-risk environment in peacekeeping missions.
