CCOPAB carries out the 2013-2 Course for Military Translators and Interpreters
From 5 to 9 of August, 2013, the Brazilian Peacekeeping Operations Joint Center (CCOPAB) will carry out the Course for Military Translators and Interpreters (ETIMil) – in-class phase, for those military personnel who have volunteered for these functions in a PKO mission and have proven proficiency in French or English. The course aims at preparing military personnel as future interpreters and translators in the Brazilian Battalion and Brazilian Engineering Company deployed in Haiti, and also at enhancing the following affective attributes: adaptability, self-confidence, comradeship, coherence, cooperation, creativity, intellectual discipline, emotional balance, initiative, organization and responsibility.
ETIMil's first phase was carried out from 1 to 26 of July in the distance learning modality. The subjects taught were language reviews (the two foreign languages and Portuguese, Brazil's mother tongue), the theoretical basis of translation and interpretation studies, the initial practice of translation to and from Portuguese, and Computer Assisted Translation, or CATs.
Through the week of the in-class phase, the apprentices will participate in technical and practical instructions in similar conditions of those they will actually face in Haiti so that they can accomplish their tasks accordingly during the peacekeeping mission.
During the opening class of the Course, CCOPAB's Commander Colonel Baganha presented a lecture on the organization, the mission and the work developed in the Center, and showed the courses given and the peacekeeping missions Brazilian military personnel have been deployed to nowadays. After that, Major Claudia Brito presented a lecture on the course and its development. Then Captain Ana Cardoso gave the students a Diagnostic Assessment, and she and Captain Israel talked about the "UN System".
In the afternoon, Captain Israel presented a "Workshop on Computer Assisted Translation Tools", and guest instructors Captain Béraud and Major Ivana Mara presented a "Workshop on Sight Translation Skills", respectively for the French speaking and the English speaking apprentices.
