CCOPAB Pays Tribute to Brazilians Who Passed Away in the Haiti Earthquake
Rio de Janeiro (RJ) – On January 13, 2025, the Brazilian Peace Operations Joint Training Center (CCOPAB) held a ceremony honoring Brazilians who lost their lives during the earthquake that devastated the city of Port-au-Prince, Haiti's capital, on January 12, 2010. This natural disaster claimed the lives of over 200,000 people, including Brazilian military personnel, police officers, and civilians deployed as part of the United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH).
The solemn act took place in front of the "Haiti Memorial" — a monument that honors the Brazilian blue helmets who lost their lives during the earthquake — commencing with a roll call of the deceased Brazilians, followed by the playing of Taps, a moment when all CCOPAB members saluted in respect to the 22 eternal peacemakers.
The event was attended by Captain ADRIANO, a Military Chaplain from the São Sebastião Military Chaplaincy, who spoke words of respect to all Peacekeepers who, despite the risks and uncertainties faced in Peacekeeping Missions under the auspices of the United Nations (UN), dedicate themselves to the defense of others and world peace.
During the earthquake, 18 members of the Brazilian Army, 1 Military Police Officer from the Federal District (PMDF), and 3 UN civilian staff members lost their lives.
