CCOPAB starts international training course on Protection of Civilians
Rio de Janeiro (RJ) – On 03 October 2022, the Brazilian Peace Operations Joint Training Center (CCOPAB) started the United Nations Protection of Civilians Course (UNPOC), aiming to prepare military and police personnel to perform functions regarding the Protection of Civilians system, within the scope of the United Nations peacekeeping operations (UNPKOs).
The course will be delivered in two weeks (03 to 14 October), having 54 national and international students. The Brazilian students are from the three National Armed Forces, in addition to some from the State Police Departments of Bahia, Maranhão, Mato Grosso do Sul, Rio de Janeiro, Rio Grande do Sul and São Paulo. The foreign students, on the other hand, come from Chile, Ecuador, Mozambique, Peru, Spain, and Uruguay; they enrolled in the UNPOC through an offer presented by Brazil on the occasion of the Peacekeeping Ministerial Conference in December 2021.
For some years, the issue of Protection of Civilians has been gaining more and more relevance in terms of peace operations, since the scenarios in which they are set require timely and adequate responses to the growing challenges imposed on blue helmets by threats and negative impacts of conflicts local civilian populations have been exposed to.
