Nicosia (Cyprus). An instructor from the Brazilian Peace Operations Joint Training Center - Sergio Vieira de Mello Center - a Brazilian Army Educational Organization supervised by the Department of Military Technical Education is currently holding a position in the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP).

After a careful selection process under the responsibility of the Brazilian Army Commander's Office, Major (Armour) Victor Manoel ARRUDA do Nascimento was selected to join UNFICYP from July 2021 to July 2022.

The position Major ARRUDA holds is that of U5 Plans and Policy with the following tasks:

UNFICYP
Cyprus became independent in 1960 with a constitution that was intended to balance the interests of Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot communities. Cyprus, Greece, Turkey, and the United Kingdom entered into a treaty to guarantee the basic provisions of the constitution and the territorial integrity and sovereignty of the country.

A series of constitutional crises resulted, however, in the outbreak of intercommunal violence in December 1963. After all attempts to restore peace failed, the UN Security Council unanimously adopted Resolution No. 186, of 4 March 1964, which recommended the establishment of UNFICYP, aiming to contribute to the maintenance and restoration of law and order as well as to a return to normal conditions, among others.

After the hostilities of 1974, the Security Council adopted a number of resolutions expanding UNFICYP’s mandate. The changes included supervising the de facto ceasefire that came into effect on 16 August 1974, and maintaining a buffer zone between the lines of the Cyprus National Guard and of the Turkish and Turkish Cypriot forces.

UNFICYP mandates have been renewed every six months and the last renewal Resolution is No. 2587, of 29 July 2021.
