CCOPAB carries out the Hostile Environment Awareness Training for Civilians (HEAT)

Rio de Janeiro, RJ - From 09 to 13 August 2021, the Brazilian Peace Operations Joint Training Center - Sergio Vieira de Mello Center, a Brazilian Army Educational Organization, carried out the Hostile Environment Awareness Training for Civilians (HEAT 2021), whose aim is to train the civilian component either working or which will work in unstable environments. The activity primarily meant to provide students with basic notions on individual protection and security.

In this edition, thirty-three students, among other institutions, attended the course:
- the Brazilian Research Network on Peace Operations (REBRAPAZ); Federal Rural University of Rio de Janeiro; Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro; Fluminense Federal University; Federal Unversity of Paraná; UNESP; Pontifical Catholic University of Minas Gerais; University of São Paulo;
- the British Consulate-General Rio de Janeiro; Office of Institutional Security; Educational Network for Human Rights in Palestine/Israel; Volunteer Connection in Campos; Caritas Brazil; Southern Baptist Convention - International Mission Board; Rio de Janeiro International Airport; Operational Journal; Macaé City Hall; and State Department of Penitentiary Administration (DF, RJ and MA).

The students received instructions on communication and negotiation, first aid, firefighting, risk analysis and mitigation, chemical biological radiological and nuclear defense (CBRND), and the like.

During the activity, it is important to highlight the following participations:
- Dr. Eduarda Hamann, General Coordinator of REBRAPAZ;
- Mr. Gabriel Valadares, from the International Committee of the Red Cross;
- Ms. Fernanda Brasil, sharing her experience in UN Peace Missions in Haiti, DR Congo, CAR and Mali; and
- Ms. Bia Albernaz, sharing her experience in DR Congo, Colombia and South Sudan.
Furthermore, the HEAT 2021 relied on the significant support from the following military organizations in Vila Militar:
- 8th Airborne Artillery Campaign Group;
- Airborne Pathfinder Coy;
- 57th Mtz Infantry Bn;
- 15th Mechanized Armoured Regiment;
- Specialized Training School;
- Eastern Military Training Center; and
- Afonsos Air Force Base.
