CCOPAB carries out international workshop on Protection of Civilians in unstable contexts
The opening ceremony of the international workshop on Integrated Protection of Civilians (IPoC), conducted by the Brazilian Peace Operations Joint Training Center (CCOPAB, acronym in Portuguese), took place on July 3 in the lecture hall of the Brazilian War College, in Urca, Rio de Janeiro. The event, which aims at discussing the new syllabus for the 2018 Course on Protection of Civilians, will be held until July 7.

The lecture delivered by CCOPAB’s commander, Colonel Carlos Augusto Ramires Teixeira, was the starting point of the Conference. By means of an interview, he emphasized the importance of the event for the integration among the various actors that take part in humanitarian and peace missions. According to him, it is essential to understand and respect the different mandates that rule the activities of each institution in order to focus on the main goal: protect civilians that live in conflict countries.

On the very first day of the event, Brazilian and foreign speakers delivered lectures, such as: General Foster, Deputy Chief of the Office of Military Affairs of the United Nations Department of Peacekeeping Operations; General Novaes, former Commander of the Brazilian Army Peacekeeping Operations Training Center (CIOpPAZ, acronym in Portuguese); Major Rozas, former Liaison Officer of the UNMISS (United Nations Mission in South Sudan); Dr. Lotte Vermeij, Women Protection Advisor of MONUSCO (United Nations Organization Mission in Democratic Republic of the Congo); Ricardo Oliveira, representative of the Brazilian Network of Research on Peace Operations (REBRAPAZ, acronym in Portuguese); and Marta Garcia, of OXFAM (Oxford Committee for Famine Relief).




Moreover, there are other lecturers in the event schedule, just as follows: the former commander of the 24th Brazilian Battalion in MINUSTAH (United Nations Stabilization Mission In Haiti); former member of UNPol in MINUSTAH; former commander of the Uruguayan contingent in MONUSCO; representatives of UNICEF Brazil; of Doctors Without Borders-Brazil; of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees-Brazil; of the World Food Programme; and of the International Organization for Migration.
