Leaders Seminar – Peacekeeping Operations – Americas 2011 (Exercise)
Within the period of 28 March and 01 April 2011, Rio de Janeiro hosts, at the facilities of the Brazilian Peacekeeping Operations Joint Center (CCOPAB, acronym in Portuguese) and also of the Center for Personnel Studies (CEP, acronym in Portuguese), the Leaders Seminar – PKO Americas – 2011. This event is supported by the US Army South Command, having the Brazilian Army as its host.
Besides strengthening the relations of friendship and confidence between the Armies, this seminar has the objective of keeping the doctrinal and methodological enhancements, thus becoming effective tools for training and updating the knowledge of participants. The standardization accomplished during the seminar will allow the CPX to be carried out in May 2011, also in Brazil.
In addition to the participation of Brazil and the USA, the event also counts on the participation of the following countries: Argentina, Belize, Bolivia, Canada, Chile, Colombia, The Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Peru, Paraguay, El Salvador, Uruguay, and other several international organizations.
First day – 28 March 2011
The event began at 0830h, at CCOPAB, with the arrival of the representatives of all the participating countries, who were welcomed by Col Pedro Aurélio de Pessôa, commander of CCOPAB, and also by some officers of his staff. The opening ceremony was presided by LTG Oswaldo de Jesus Ferreira, commander of the 1st Army Division and Garrison of the Military Village. The first lecture, by Mr. Giancarlo Summa from UNIC-Rio, was about the structure and organization of the UN. After that, Lt Col Carlos Socin, Argentine Army, spoke about the organization of a Peacekeeping Mission and Command Relations. After lunch, Mr. Stuart Warner, representative of the United States Army South, explained the CPX (Command Post Exercise) Working Methodology. Then Mr. Ruben César from NGO Viva Rio talked about Civil Organizations in a Peacekeeping Mission. At the end of the day, Captain (Marines) Carlos Chagas Vianna Braga dealt with Military Force and Staff Organization.
At night, there was a welcoming cocktail at Copacabana Fort, which counted on the presences of the participants and the organizational committee of the event.
