Symposium of Civil-Military Cooperation in Peacekeeping Operations (2nd day)

The versatile actions of different organs in the post-earthquake period in Haiti are the focus of debates on the second day of the CIMIC Symposium.

Around the INTEGRATION fulcrum, the second-day lectures of the Symposium of Civil-Military Cooperation in Peacekeeping Operations 2010- 1 (CIMIC), on April 7, 2010, in the auditorium of the Center for Personnel Studies, dealt with important themes related to the activities of the Doctors without Borders, of the International Committee of the Red Cross, of the Fire Department, of the Peacekeeping Engineering Company (BRAENGCOY) in Haiti. All of the lectures focused on the actions carried out during the critical period that followed the earthquake in Haiti, especially highlighting the lessons learned during that situation of crisis, in which integrating the multiple actors of humanitarian assistance is essential and indispensable.

Captain RODRIGUES, coordinator of CIMIC, gave the first morning lecture which talked about “Getting to know MINUSTAH”. Subsequently, Ms. SIMONE ROCHA, representative of the Doctors without Borders, presented an important lecture, discussing the “Activities Developed by the MSF in Haiti, post-earthquake”.

In the afternoon, LTC LOUREIRO from the Fire Department, who led the fire fighters’ rescue team immediately after the earthquake in Haiti, lectured on the performance of the Military Fire Department in Rio de Janeiro concerning the amazing job of removing victims from the rubbles on the days that followed the major disaster in Haiti. Then, 1st Lieutenant VALDETARO, who, besides being an instructor of CIOpPAZ, was also in the combined rescue mission with LTC LOUREIRO’s team, gave a lecture on the “Activities Developed by BRAENGCOY in Haiti, at the post-earthquake period”. According to a researcher of CIOpPAZ and also a student of the International Relations course from IBMEC, ALIK BARBOSA, “the fire department’s and Lieutenant VALDETARO’s lectures were very clarifying, in relation to the activities developed on the immediate period after the earthquake, demonstrating the coordination between Fire Department and BRABATT, more specifically BRAENGCOY”, and she completed saying that “the methodology of the presentations is dynamic, giving us the opportunity of having a real notion  of the consequences of a disaster of the magnitude of the earthquake in Haiti”.

Colonel PEDRO AURÉLIO DE PESSÔA, CI Op Paz commander, also gave a lecture discussing the “Activities Developed by the Brazilian Peacekeeping Infantry Battalion in Haiti, at the pos-earthquake period”.

The second day of the CIMIC Symposium finished with the lecture “Group dynamics and management of the SWOT matrix”, given by the 2nd Lieutenant REIS, from the Center for Personnel Studies (CEP).
