Explosive Ordnance Disposal Company (EOD Coy)

Brasília/DF – On January 15, 2024, the Land Operations Command (COTER, acronym in Portuguese) and the Construction Engineering Department (DEC, acronym in Portuguese) jointly inserted into the UN Peacekeeping Capabilities Readiness System (UNPCRS) the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Company (EOD Coy).

The company has a strength of 140 (one hundred and forty) troops, with the following capabilities:

a. keep, provide maintenance and operate explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) neutralization equipment;

b. carry out reconnaissance, identification, field assessment, neutralization and collection of explosive devices, including improvised explosive devices (IED);

c. carry out the identification and neutralization of explosive devices that threaten or hinder the freedom of movement of troops, including the destruction of captured devices, as well as assistance in the neutralization of the unserviceable devices; and

d. support the collection and storage of explosive devices components (forensic activity).

For the preparation and training of the EOD Company, the Joint Brazilian Peace Operations Center (CCOPAB, acronym in Portuguese) and the Engineering Instruction Center (CI Eng, acronym in Portuguese), respectively located in Rio de Janeiro/Rio de Janeiro and Araguari/Minas Gerais, will during the current year, assist in improving neutralization techniques. All this in accordance with international standards prescribed by the United Nations, due to the need for continuous preparation of the EOD Company, according to the technical and highly specialized nature of this capacity.

It is worth to highlight that CCOPAB and CI Eng assist in the preparation of Brazilian military personnel, police officers, and civilians, as well as the ones from friendly nations, for peacekeeping missions, by preparing troops, military observers and staff officers, in themes such as protection of civilians and mine action activities. Thus, there are courses offered by the Department of Engineering and Construction, in the context of the UN Triangular Partnership Program (TPP), such as: Management and Environment; Renewable Energy; Engineering Project Management; Horizontal Construction; Well Drilling; Neutralization of IED and EOD; among other activities, being a global reference for other countries of friendly nations.
