CCOPAB carries out Mine Action Course

Rio de Janeiro – On August 17, the Brazilian Peace Operations Joint Training Center (CCOPAB, acronym in Portuguese) finished the Mine Action Course, which lasted five weeks and had theoretical and practical exercises. The aim of the course was at training Brazilian military personnel as well as from friendly nations to be monitors or supervisors in demining missions under the aegis of international organisms.

Among the attendees, there were six military members from the Brazilian Army, one from the navy and two from the Peruvian Navy. The Peruvian attendees will soon be deployed in a company in the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO).

The first two weeks of the course, which was held in Spanish, were E-Learning and the other three on site. During the E-learning phase, the students learned about: UN Peace Operations, Preparatory Procedures for missions; Information on the mission areas; Hygiene and First Aid; Gender Perspective and Respect for Diversity; Civil-Military Coordination and International Humanitarian Law.

During the On Site phase, the students could learn and practice topics related to Humanitarian Demining organisms; general concepts of mine action; safety in humanitarian demining areas; monitoring of humanitarian demining organisms; non-technical study; cartography and GPS; Women, Peace and Security; Manual, Mechanic and Canine Demining techniques; and an Operative Assessment.

The Course counted on the support of the following experienced guest instructors: Colonel (Retired) Moura Gomes; Major Denivaldo de Sousa Silva; Major Hilton Martins Laureano da Silva; Major Rômulo Fabiano Pacheco Ravázio; Commander (Navy) Bruno Kochulinski Caldas; Commander (Marines) Leonel Mariano da Silva Junior; Lieutenant (Marines) Fuzileiro Naval Leone Novo Freitas; Captain Rogério Santos Silva; Captain Alexandre Wagner de Almeida e Silva; 1st Lieutenant (Marines)Alex Fernando Spadotti; and 2nd Sergeant Charles Pereira de Souza.
