UAS & Airborne ISR Workshop

Taubaté (São Paulo) – In the last week of October, the Brazilian Army Aviation held the UAS & Airborne ISR Workshop, an international workshop on the unmanned aerial vehicle and intelligence, surveillance and aerial recconnaissance. In a partnership with the United Nations, the Brazilian Army Land Operations Command (COTEr, acronym in Portuguese) ran the workshop, which gathered participants of the Brazilian Armed Forces as well as UN representatives and experts from Switzerland, Spain and the United States.

Seminars and debate panels were carried out by renowed personnel, who addressed topics such as technological innovations, tactical and operational applications, imagery analysis and the use of Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS) in combat and support missions, as well as in peace operations.

Furthermore, the UAS & AIRBONE ISR Workshop stood out as an international collaboration. The participants could establish partnerships and networking, which are key for the strenghtning of defense and security capabilities of countries, alligned with the objectives of UN. The event represented a meaningful progress for the Brazilian Navy, Army and Air Force concerning the integration among forces and evolution of the unmanned aircraft systems as part of the National Defense.

Major general Rabêlo, Chief of Peace Missions, Aviation and General Inspector of the Military Police, addressed the importance of the Workshop for UN and Brazil. “While the RPAS increases the situational awareness of a commander in a peace operation, it also demands coordination among all actors that use airspace and among agencies that have a role in the mission. Once the data is obtained, it needs to be managed in order to produce information and it also needs to be protected so that it does not fall into the wrong hands”.

Besides strenghtning the Brazilian commitment with technological innovation in the Armed Forces, the Workshop places the country as a key partner in the global defense and security scenario.

Brazilian Army Aviation and RPAS

The Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems, more commonly known as drones, are a reality in the current wars and conflicts. Therefore, the Army Aviation has invested in this kind of technology, employing RPAS categories 0, 1 and 2, according to the weight, height and way of employment.

The RPAS CAT NAURU 1000 is the most used of the systems by the Army nowadays. Its dimesions are eight meters of wingspan, three meters long and can reach up to 100 km/h. It has an eight hour operational autonomy, day and night. The equipment has been through technical evaluation and it is currently being tested for military operations.
