Closing of the Final Training Exercise of BRABAT 23
Pelotas (RS) - In the morning of October 23, the end of the second week of exercise, the Brazilian Peace Operations Joint Training Center (CCOPAB) carried out the After Action Review (AAR) of the UN Pre-Deployment Advanced Field Exercise (EAOP, acronym in Portuguese) of BRABAT 23 which will be part of the United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH, acronym in French).
EAOP is a major exercise, developed in the urban perimeter of Pelotas, which demands a complex material and personnel logistics to coordinate, assess and certify the activities developed by BRABAT 23. Therefore, almost 300 professionals were employed, mainly military personnel and representatives from local public security organisms.
The participation of civilians, college and language students, contributed by role-playing several actors which BRABAT 23 may find in Haiti, such as: international media, NGO representatives, UN representatives, Haitian government representatives, etc.
CCOPAB military personnel were divided into two teams. The first was responsible for the administrative and operational part of the exercise, composed of CCOPAB's members; and the second, responsible for observing, coordinating and assessing BRABAT's fractions, was composed of the military personnel who were part of the last Brazilian contingent in Haiti.
MINUSTAH was created in 2004, by Resolution 1542 of the UN Security Council. Brazil takes part in this mission by sending troops and commanding the military component. Throughout these eleven years, 23 troop contingents were sent to Haiti, gaining remarkable international recognition for the Brazilian performance in peace operations. As a result, EAOP received the visit of officers from several countries (France, Portugal, India and Angola) which are also troop contributors to UN peace missions.
The Southern Military Commander (CMS, acronym in Portuguese), General Mourão, Deputy Commander of the Land Operations Center (COTER, acronym in Portuguese), Lieutenant General Freitas, Chief of the Operations Coordination Center from the Southern Military Command (CCOp/CMS), Lieutenant General Goulart, and the Commander of the 8th Motorized Infantry Brigade, Major General Silveira, were also present to the final training exercise of BRABAT 23.
