CCOPAB celebrates its 5th Anniversary

This Friday, June 19, the Brazilian Peace Operations Joint Training Center celebrated its 5th anniversary, completed on June 15. The event was highlighted by a parade in which Colonel José Ricardo Vendramin Nunes, CCOPAB Commander, addressed a few words to remember the date.

Resolution 44/49, of the UN General Assembly, of 08 Dec 1989, encouraged Member States to establish training programs for peace missions. Such incentive gained strength in a meeting of the IV Committee of the UN General Assembly on October 04, 2005. This incentive to the Member States eventually became a commitmment. Due to these events and the increasing international mobilization towards creating structures to disseminate existing procedures and norms in peace mission, the Brazilian Army created, through Ordinance nr 90, of 23 Feb 2005, the Peace Operations Instruction Center (CIOPaz - acronym in Portuguese).

As a consequence of the international commitmment related to the United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH), CIOPaz started its activities by preparing the then Brigade Haiti.

On June 15, 2010, through Ordinance nr 952, the Ministry of Defense changed the name of the unit to Brazilian Peace Operations Joint Training Center (CCOPAB). It was designated to prepare military and civilian personnel from Brazil and friendly nations for peace missions. The Navy and the Air Force were included in the training and, since then, on this day, CCOPAB's anniversary is celebrated.
