The Naval Battle of Riachuelo and promotion of military personnel

On June 11, the Brazilian Peacekeeping Operations Joint Center celebrated the 148th anniversary of the Naval Battle of Riachuelo, Brazilian Navy's Main Date, in the Sergio Vieira de Mello Cultural Facility. At this opportunity, insignias were granted to the recently promoted and the Order of the Day of the Navy Commander, Squadron Admiral Julio Soares de Moura Neto, was read.
The Naval Battle of Riachuelo is considered, by historians, as a key battle of the War of the Triple Alliance against Paraguay (1864 – 1870) – the largest military conflict in South America, the number of deaths was only outnumbered in the New World by the American Civil War (1861-1865). The importance of the victory in this battle is connected with the fact that, until that date, Paraguay had the initiative in the war and it inverted the situation, assuring Brazil to use and block the rivers which were the main arteries in the theater of operations.
