Second week of the Training – Third day
On April 24, the groups got together in separate rooms to continue working on the Practical Exercise on Staff Activity. During the day, the students received missions from the UN Staff to make decisions and actions in hypothetical situations of crisis management.
On the previous day, the military personnel were briefed on how to proceed during the exercise and the rooms were prepared for this activity. First, they carried out the first phase of the planning process and presented to the UN facilitators.
Today, the students started the second phase of the planning process which was the Mission Analysis. They presented a briefing to the facilitators and gave the orders they thought were necessary. At the opportunity, some possible hypothetical situations that might happen in a peacekeeping mission area were presented to the students.
Among the simulated activities of crisis management, the students received news from a local fictitious newspaper, which they should analyze and take the measures they thought were appropriate. Among the news, one talked about a UN vehicle whose personnel drove across a minefield and died. The truthfulness of the fact was checked and it was not true. The situation was reported to the higher echelon. An armed ambush to surprise a group of peacekeepers was also published and the students had to deal with the situation.
