CCOPAB takes part in virtual seminar carried by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC)
Rio de Janeiro, RJ. Since 06 October 2021, instructors from the Brazilian Peace Operations Joint Training Center, Sergio Vieira de Mello Center - a Brazilian Army training center subordinate to the Department of Military Technical Education (DETMIL, acronym in Portuguese) have taken part in a virtual seminar carried out, on conference call, by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).
The seminar, named “International Humanitarian Law Meeting (IHL): the current challenges of the IHL in Latin America” will be divided into four sessions that will take place in October, according to the following schedule:
- Session N° 1: “Urban violence in armed conflict contexts and other violence situations”;
- Session N° 2: “Memory in Armed Conflicts”;
- Session N° 3: “Humanitarian Consequences of long-lasting conflicts”; and
- Session N° 4: “Children and the armed conflicts”.
In the opening event, the participation of high-ranked Geneva ICRC members was noted, as well as the presence of Mr. Gabriel Valladares, International Committee of the Red Cross Regional Legal Advisor (Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Paraguay and Uruguay). On the occasion, the Red Cross International Review released articles in Spanish.
Session 1: “Urban violence in armed conflict contexts and other violence situations”, which took place on October 6th, relied on the participation of military and civilian lecturers, which highly contributed to Sergio Vieira de Mello Center teaching staff knowledge-wise.
In the context of CCOPAB, International Humanitarian Law (IHL) is a highly relevant topic, once it’s widespread in the scope of the Peacekeeping Operations pre-deployment training under the supervision of international organizations (UN and OAS).
