International Day of UN Peacekeepers

On 24 February 2003, by means of resolution No. 57/129, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) instituted the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers in reference to resolution No. 50, of 29 May 1948, which implemented the first peacekeeping operation – The United Nations Truce Supervision Organization (UNTSO).

29 May recognizes the professionalism, dedication and courage of men and women who have served and still keep serving in peace missions, as well as it pays a tribute to those who have sacrificed their lives for the cause of peace: from 29 May 1948 until 30 April 2021, 4,089 peacekeepers have fallen in PKOs, including 42 Brazilians.
