CCOPAB participates in the Air Force training of Air Units

Campo Grande (MS) - From 12 to 23 August, a team from the Brazilian Peace Operations Joint Training Center (CCOPAB, acronym in Portuguese) - Sergio Vieira de Mello Center -, composed by LTC (Air Force) Ayres, MAJ (Army) Christiane Lima, MAJ (Air Force) Henrique Santos, MAJ (Military Police from Goiás State) Barcellos and 2nd Sgt (Army) Gabriel Machado went to Campo Grande city, in Mato Grosso do Sul, to carry out the Instruction for the Training of Air Units, offered by Brazil in the UN Peacekeeping Capabilities Readiness System.

MAJ (Air Force) Henrique Santos, coordinator of instruction, said that the concepts and doctrine of the United Nations that are necessary for the certification of Air Units were learnt by heart by the 61 students of Wing 5, as well as the students from the 1st Squadron of the 9th Aviation Group of Wing 9. These units operate the C-105 Amazonas, H-60L Blackhawk and A-29 Super Tucano aircraft, which may be employed in Peace Operations.

One of the students - 3rd Sgt Amanda Ariane Gomes da Silva - said: "I learned many things that I didn't know and those things will probably make a big difference if I have to go to a Peace Operation. I am feeling prepared and more motivated than ever to face this challenge". CPT (Air Force) Tiago Taffarel, one of the pilots, also said: "This instruction has shown us a multitude of interesting possibilities, because we have been able to interact with experts from all over the world who work directly with Air Units in Mission of Peace".

The activity was carried out through lectures, daily learning assessments and practical case study exercises, which required the search for solutions within a hypothetical scenario of a UN Peace Operation. The Training Team was also composed by LTC (Air Force) Diego Henrique de Brito and LTC (Air Force) Bruno Cesar Janhsen - two invited instructors from Air Force who are members of Regional Flight Protection Service (SRPV-SP, acronym in Portuguese) and Air Force General Staff (EMAER, acronym in Portuguese), respectively.

It deserves to be highlighted the participation of the following international speakers, through interactive VTC over two weeks: COL Moura, Ministry of Defense; COL (Retired) Werneck, UN Headquarters - New York; MAJ. Ayax Solis, MINUSMA (Mali) - Timbuktu; and Mr. André Rodrigues, UNSOS (Somalia/Kenya) - Nairobi. All of them have UN Peace Mission experience in countries such as East Timor, Western Sahara, Congo, Central African Republic, Somalia, Liberia, Haiti and South Sudan or at the UN Headquarters in New York.
