CCOPAB participates in instructions of the Safe and Secure Approaches in Field Environment Course

On November 29, the Brazilian Peace Operations Joint Training Center (CCOPAB, acronym in Portuguese) supported the training of the United Nations Department of Safety and Security (UNDSS) by carrying out the practical activities of the Course on Safe and Secure Approaches in Field Environments (SSAFE). The certification ceremony was held at CCOPAB’s facilities and followed by a cocktail.

The first two days of the Course, held at Itamaraty Palace, comprised theoretical lessons about risk analysis, incident management, personal safety, how to act in case of kidnappings, verbalization strategy, negotiation in hostile environments and how UN safety policies function.

On the last day of the training, a Field Exercise was carried out by CCOPAB in order to put into practice the theoretical part. The students had the opportunity to train progression in risky areas, first aid procedures and how to behave if kidnapped.

The Course aims at meeting the security needs of UN employees who work in Brazil and it counted on the participation of members of the United Nations Information Center in Rio de Janeiro (UNIC Rio), UNICEF and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA). Other organizations, which are not part of the UN System, also participated in the Course, such as: Criminal Police, State Police, International Committee of the Red Cross (Brazil) and members of the Canadian and German embassies.

Thirty-nine attendees finished the Course, among military and civilian personnel, out of which two members were from CCOPAB, seven from the Public Security System and thirty civilians, being fifteen women and twenty-four men.
