Course on Humanitarian Demining for International Monitors and Supervisors
From 01 to 26 of August, 2011, the Brazilian Peacekeeping Operations Joint Center (acronym in Portuguese: CCOPAB) held the 2011 Course on Humanitarian Demining for International Monitors and Supervisors. CCOPAB is a military unit linked to the Brazilian Ministry of Defense and placed in the city of Rio de Janeiro; its mission is to support the preparation and training of military and police personnel, as well as civilians, from Brazil and friendly nations in peace and humanitarian demining missions. The course offers professional capability for Engineering officers, NCOs and sergeants to:
- act in Humanitarian Demining missions under the aegis of international organizations;
- help the command or higher echelon in making decisions during humanitarian demining operations; and
- support, as may be the case, the different organisms of the UN and the Organization of American States, as well as the government of the host country and the Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) that act in the environment of Peace Operations and Humanitarian Actions in what humanitarian demining is concerned.
Participants of this Course were 04 Officers from the Brazilian Navy, and 01 Officer and 03 NCOs from the Brazilian Army. It is necessary to highlight the illustrious presences of Mr. Gabriel Valladares, the representative of the International Committee of the Red Cross, and Commander (Reserve) Theotonio Chagas Toscano de Britto, an expert in the use of improvised explosives.
