CCOPAB pays tribute to UN Peacekeepers

The United Nations established May 29 as the International Day of UN Peacekeepers due to the fact that in 1948 the UN Security Council authorized the first peacekeeping operation in Palestine, after the ceasefire for the Arab-Israeli conflict. Since then, the UN gather men and women of the armed forces of its member countries, which live in political, economical, and social stability, in order to contribute to the end of conflicts, social progress, and the defense of human rights in the endangered nations.

Thus, on May 27, the Brazilian Peacekeeping Operations Joint Center (CCOPAB) carried out a military ceremony to render honors to the peacekeepers. The following personalities were present at the event: members of the first participation of a Brazilian troop in a peacekeeping mission (Suez Battalion), members of the Brazilian Detachment of the Inter-American Peace Force (FAIBRAS) in the mission of the Organization of American States in the Dominican Republic, Military Unit Commanders, and other civil personalities and authorities.

During the ceremony, a reverence was paid to the Brazilian military personnel and civilians who died in peacekeeping missions by laying a wreath at the peace memorial. It was a way of expressing gratitude to those who lost their lives to promote the end of hostilities as well as to search for a lasting peace. Another important moment during the ceremony was the handover of Suez Battalion medals to military personnel and civilians who have significantly contributed to the cause of peace.
