CCOPAB promotes a CIMIC meeting with the presence of the UN and of the Army Commander
Sport was the theme of the Course of Civil-Military Cooperation in Peacekeeping Operations which took place from 16 to 20 of May at the Brazilian Peacekeeping Operations Joint Center (CCOPAB). Around 50 people – among researchers, athletes and military personnel from Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay and Chile – debated on how to promote physical activities in areas of armed conflict to develop social values and foment peace. Edmond Mulet, the former representative of the UN Secretary-General in Haiti, Igor Kipman, the Brazilian ambassador in Haiti and General Enzo Martins Peri, Army Commander were present at the closing ceremony.
Gender equality is a priority to the United Nations and was broadly discussed during the course, which also received a representative of the UN Women Brazil and Southern Cone, Rebecca Tavares. The fundamental principles of the operations under the aegis of the United Nations, the concept of CIMIC and the protection of the Human Rights were some of the lectures given. The importance of martial intelligence to develop self-control and self-confidence were shown by the Kung Fu master Leo Iamamura. Social projects led by athletes of high performance – such as Pedro Rizzo (MMA), Fernanda Keller (Triathlon), Claudia and Kátia Alencar (Rowing) – and physical education professionals were also presented.
The students had the opportunity to visit the boxing gym Nobre Arte which has been offering the sport as an alternative to crime in the Cantagalo community, in the southern area of Rio de Janeiro. The creator of the project, instructor Claudio Coelho, told this successful story, and shared the touching moments of his career as a coach who trained more than world champions, champions of life. To conclude the course, the students carried out group work, in which the proposed solutions to lower the violence in a town of a fictitious country at war.
